Los Cuervos Volaron. The Crows Took Flight

Friday night at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Super Cup was back, and so was the City faithful. Minneapolis City SC welcomed MNUFC Academy in a neighborhood derby that started close, got chippy, and ended in a statement. Final score: Minneapolis City SC 5, MNUFC Academy 2. Que noche, Crows. Que noche.

MNUFC came out with energy and drew first blood. Julian Banks, a Wisconsin Badger and Academy graduate, tapped home a close-range finish from a slick Caleb Capone cross to put the Loons up 1-0 at the half. The young Loons were holding their own and the Crows had work to do.

The second half told a completely different story. Ten minutes in, Tomas Menna threaded a cross into the box that a MNUFC defender redirected into his own net. Tied at one, and the crowd felt the shift.

The Turning Point

Then came Caleb Capone. Phil Caputo, St. Cloud State Husky turned City standout, launched a cross-field ball wide to Shea Bechtel, who reversed it perfectly into the six-yard box for Capone to finish. 2-1 City.

Bechtel then took matters into his own hands—firing a laser from 20 yards that dipped sharply past keeper Keane Perkins at the near post. Brutal. 3-1. Five minutes later, he nodded home a Caputo delivery from the right after a neat Ronan Selbo setup. Dos goles. The St. Olaf product was everywhere.

MNUFC answered with a soft penalty tucked home by James McCann to make it 4-2, but the coup de grace came in the 85th minute, Ari van Mol shrugging off his marker and hammering a shot from the left that deflected over the diving keeper. 5-2. Game over. Crows win.

Minnesota soccer is alive on both sides of the street. Y nosotros estamos aqui para contarlo.
