Minneapolis, MN – In an era when colleges across the nation grapple with equitable access and retention, a program at Minneapolis College has quietly emerged as a significant model for supporting its Latinx student population. Known as LUCHA — Spanish for “fight” or “struggle” — this initiative transcends conventional academic advising, offering a comprehensive framework designed to bolster the recruitment, retention, and overall academic achievement of its students. It is a concerted effort to empower individuals, enabling them to navigate higher education and ultimately realize their full capabilities, helping them rise to their fullest, most magnificent potential.
At its core, LUCHA — guided by coordinator Sagrario Torres Flores — embodies a commitment to culturally relevant support. Recognizing the unique experiences and responsibilities often shouldered by Latinx students, the program offers academic advising that thoughtfully considers aspects like family commitments, work obligations, and the complexities faced by mixed-status families. This personalized approach, which includes Spanish interpretation assistance, ensures that students feel truly seen, heard, and understood from the moment they step onto campus.
The program’s mission extends to providing a safe and supportive environment for all. LUCHA champions an atmosphere intolerant of harassment or discriminatory behavior, adhering strictly to the Minneapolis College Code of Conduct. This foundation of safety allows students to thrive academically and personally.
LUCHA actively works to advocate for Latinx student representation and participation in influential positions, both within Minneapolis College and beyond its campus borders. This dedication to leadership development is a cornerstone of their empowerment philosophy. Through culturally-specific supports, LUCHA guides students through every step of their academic journey. This includes assistance with admission applications for immigrant students, ESOL course placement, and navigating financial aid options like the MN Dream Act application and Latine-specific scholarship searches. The program also offers guidance on course selection, major declaration, and even practical assistance with student emails, D2L, and ordering textbooks.
Beyond initial enrollment, LUCHA remains a steadfast partner, committed to supporting students until they graduate or successfully transfer to a four-year institution. This long-term commitment encompasses ongoing academic advising, connecting students with crucial career and community networking opportunities, assistance with appeals and transfer pathways, and understanding bills and payments. The program also promotes the Star Scholarship Program, providing direct access to vital financial aid information.
A cornerstone of LUCHA’s community-building efforts is the Latinx Student Union (LSU). Run by a dedicated board of students, the LSU fosters a supportive and educational environment where Latinx students can connect with one another and celebrate their diverse cultures. Weekly meetings are open to all, requiring no prior sign-up, ensuring an inclusive space for engagement and leadership development. Interested students can contact Sagrario Torres Flores for information on available student leadership positions.
LUCHA’s reach extends through strategic partnerships with influential community organizations, bolstering its capacity to serve students comprehensively. They collaborate with:
- United We Dream: A national, immigrant-youth led network providing vital scholarship and health resources for DACA and immigrant youth, alongside updates on immigration policy.
- Unidos MN: An intersectional, intergenerational, feminist Latinx-led organization committed to social justice, with campaigns spanning immigration, education, environmental justice, and participatory democracy.
- Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES): Minnesota’s largest Latino-led nonprofit, focused on advancing social and economic equity, offering diverse programs from youth mentorship to adult ESL classes.
- Communities Organizing Latinx Power and Action (COPAL): A grassroots organization dedicated to impacting the quality of life for Latinos in Minnesota through public policy, leadership, and community service.
- MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC): An all-volunteer, grassroots movement advocating for legalization for all, an end to raids and deportations, and full equality for immigrants.
Recognizing the holistic needs of its students, LUCHA also serves as a critical connector to essential health and wellness resources. Students have access to the Boynton Student Health Clinic for on-campus medical services, often at no cost. For food insecurity, LUCHA guides students to resources like foodpantries.org. Mental health support is also a priority, with referrals to Synergy Therapy, Hennepin County mental health services, the Crisis Text Line (text “MN” to 741741), and the National Suicide Prevention Line (1-800-279-TALK). Additionally, resources like the Family Preparedness Plan by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center and NAMI Minnesota provide crucial support for families and those navigating mental health challenges.
For complex immigration and legal consultation needs, LUCHA provides a comprehensive directory of trusted organizations. These include the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) for “Know Your Rights” handouts, the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) for free legal representation, Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights Refugee and Asylum, Volunteers Lawyers Network, and Mid-MN Legal Aid. For specific consular services and advocacy, LUCHA directs students to the Consulate General of Ecuador in Minnesota and the Mexican Consulate in St. Paul.
The LUCHA program is currently open for in-person operations, with advising appointments available by request, including via Zoom. Students are encouraged to contact Sagrario Torres Flores directly to schedule appointments or inquire about interpretation assistance. LUCHA stands as a powerful testament to Minneapolis College’s commitment to fostering a truly inclusive and empowering educational experience for its Latinx student community.
