Loons Fall Short 2-1 in Kansas City
Minnesota United stepped into Kansas City last night with fresh piernas and a renewed espíritu, kicking off the second half of their MLS season after a long summer break. But Sporting KC- siempre difíciles at home- edged out a 2–1 win in a match that had everything: grit, counters, yellow cards, and flashes of Loons brilliance that remind us this squad still has bite.
Sporting struck first in the 28th minute when Dejan Joveljić drilled a low right‑footed shot from 15 meters, finishing off a slick half‑space pass from Capita. It was Joveljić’s eighth goal of the season, and KC rode that momentum hard.
Minnesota actually controlled the ball, 65% possession- and generated early chances through Joaquín Pereyra, Tomás Chancalay, and Kelvin Yeboah, but Sporting keeper Stefan Cleveland was locked in, stacking six saves on the night.
Just after halftime, KC doubled the lead. In the 54th minute, Manu García swept home his second goal of the season after combination play from Jake Davis and Calvin Harris. Minnesota’s defense scrambled, and Drake Callender kept the Loons alive with five saves, including a huge stop on a Joveljić free kick before the break.
But aquí no se rinden. Minnesota punched back.
In the 75th minute, Pereyra bent a gorgeous free kick into the box, and Devin Padelford rose like a giant to smash home a header, his first goal of the season. The Loons suddenly had life, and the final 15 minutes felt like pure MLS chaos: fouls, counters, subs, and Minnesota pushing numbers forward.
Bongi Hlongwane, subbed on late, brought instant energía, drawing fouls and stretching KC’s back line. Owen Gene and Anthony Markanich were standouts defensively, shutting down multiple KC transitions and keeping Minnesota in the fight.
Despite out‑passing Sporting 505 to 237, winning more duels, and generating two big chances, the Loons couldn’t find the equalizer. Sporting KC’s clinical finishing- and home‑field magic sealed the result.
But let’s be clear: Minnesota showed corazón. After weeks away, they returned with rhythm, possession dominance, and flashes of attacking swagger. If this is the energy they carry into the second half of the season, cuidado- the Loons are ready to make noise.
Next up: Vancouver at Allianz Field, Saturday, 7/25/26, 7:30pm CST. La segunda mitad empieza ahora.
