LA, 11.1.26- Pereyra steals the spotlight, Valerius announces himself, and Minnesota delivers a performance full of carácter, confidence, and playoff urgency.

There are matches that earn three points, and then there are matches that make a statement.

Minnesota United traveled to Los Angeles needing a result and left Southern California with something much bigger: belief. Facing a playoff-bound LAFC side at BMO Stadium, the Loons delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, defeating LAFC 3-1 and extending their unbeaten run while keeping postseason hopes very much alive.

The atmosphere was intense, the stakes were high, and Minnesota responded with a performance that felt mature, disciplined, and opportunistic. While LAFC controlled possession and generated pressure, the Loons remained compact, patient, and deadly when chances arrived. Fútbol inteligente. Fútbol con propósito.

Loons breakout

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Joaquín Pereyra found himself unmarked inside the area and unleashed a beautiful left-footed volley into the corner of the net. It was the type of finish that changes the rhythm of a match and immediately put LAFC on its heels.

Five minutes later, Minnesota struck again.

Cherrion Valerius, one of the club's emerging young defenders, completed a superb attacking sequence by driving into the box and hammering home the first MLS goal of his career. The buildup showcased Minnesota's growing chemistry, with Kelvin Yeboah and Nectarios Triantis playing key roles. Suddenly, the Loons were up 2-0 and firmly in control.

LAFC threw numbers forward after halftime, firing 22 shots overall and forcing goalkeeper Drake Callender into six saves. Yet Minnesota never panicked. The back line, anchored by Jefferson Díaz, Morris Duggan, and Anthony Markanich, absorbed wave after wave of pressure while maintaining shape and discipline.

Then came the dagger

In the 81st minute, rookie Mauricio González slipped a clever pass into Pereyra's path. The Argentine midfielder calmly buried his second goal of the evening, putting Minnesota ahead 3-0 and silencing the crowd. His brace marked one of the finest individual performances by a Loon this season.

LAFC salvaged a late consolation goal through Sergio Vásquez, but by then the damage had already been done. Minnesota had controlled the moments that mattered most.

LAFC Standouts

Sergio Vásquez scored his first goal for LAFC, while veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris faced a relentless Minnesota attack all evening. Despite LAFC holding nearly 50% possession and generating numerous chances, the finishing touch never arrived consistently enough.

Coach Reaction

Head coach Eric Ramsay praised his group's discipline, organization, and ability to execute the game plan under pressure. The focus afterward wasn't on style points, but on professionalism. Minnesota understood what was at stake and played with a playoff mentality from start to finish.

With San Jose next on the schedule, the Loons enter the final stretch playing some of their best soccer of the season. If Pereyra continues pulling the strings, Yeboah keeps creating opportunities, and the defense maintains this level of concentration, cuidado Western Conference—Minnesota isn't done fighting yet.

VyD Prediction: Can the Loons Sneak Into the MLS Playoffs?

Minnesota United has done everything possible over the past month to keep its postseason hopes alive. A six‑match unbeaten run, road wins in difficult environments, and timely performances from players like Joaquín Pereyra, Kelvin Yeboah, and Drake Callender have put the Loons back in the conversation. Minnesota now sits just two points outside a playoff position with one regular‑season match remaining.

What Does the Playoff Picture Look Like?

The equation is simple:

  • Minnesota must defeat San Jose at Allianz Field.
  • The Loons also need help from teams ahead of them in the Western Conference standings.
  • A draw or loss likely ends Minnesota's postseason hopes.
  • A win keeps pressure on everyone else and gives Minnesota a realistic shot at grabbing one of the final playoff spots.

Momentum is firmly on Minnesota's side. Few teams in the West are playing better soccer right now. The confidence of Pereyra, the creativity of Mauricio González, and the growing chemistry in Eric Ramsay's system have transformed this squad over the last month.

VyD Final Match Prediction

Look for the Loons to come out aggressively against San Jose. Allianz Field should be rocking, and Minnesota understands what's at stake. Expect Yeboah to be active in the attack, Pereyra to continue pulling the strings in midfield, and the defense to play with urgency from the opening whistle.

VyD Prediction:

Minnesota United 2 – San Jose Earthquakes 0

The Bottom Line

One month ago, playoff soccer looked like a long shot. Today, Minnesota controls part of its destiny. Win the final match, create pressure, and let the Western Conference scoreboard do the rest.

Una victoria más. Noventa minutos. Una oportunidad para extender la temporada.

The Loons aren't asking for favors yet. They're earning the right to believe.
