From Allianz Field to the World Stage: Minnesota, This Is Our Moment

A Vida y Deportes Story | World Cup Street Fair 2026

Familia, let's talk about this past weekend. Because if you were at Allianz Field on Saturday, May 23rd, you already know — Minnesota soccer is alive, it's loud, and it is absolutely ready for the world.

MNUFC hosted Real Salt Lake in what would be the club's final home match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, and the Loons gave their 19,838 fans everything they came for. RSL's Zach Booth drew first blood in the 22nd minute off a slick Zavier Gozo assist, and for large stretches, it looked like Minnesota would walk away empty-handed. The Loons out-possessed RSL 55.6% to 44.4%, racked up 11 shots to RSL's 8, and generated an xG of 1.5 — the chances were there. But it took heart, grit, and one beautiful moment in the 93rd minute to make it right.

Substitute Mauricio González rose to meet a perfectly placed delivery — assisted by none other than our very own Michael Boxall — and headed home the equalizer. Final score: 1–1. A point earned. A statement made. And a send-off worthy of what comes next.

Because here's where it gets real, Familia.

Boxall isn't just a cornerstone of Minnesota's backline — he's heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to represent New Zealand's All Whites, carrying 61 international caps and 284 MNUFC appearances on his back. That header assist on Saturday? That was a man putting an exclamation point on his club chapter before writing a new one on the world stage. New Zealand draws Group G, facing:

  • Iran (June 15)
  • Egypt (June 21)
  • Belgium (June 26)

And we will be watching every single minute right here in Minnesota. He is our guy out there, and we are riding with him.

And speaking of Minnesota soccer royalty — can we take a moment for Tony Sanneh?

On May 1st, in Frisco, Texas, our own Twin Cities legend was officially inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, joining the 2026 class alongside Tobin Heath, Heather O'Reilly, and Chris Wondolowski. Tony played for the Minnesota Thunder back in 1995, scored 18 goals in just 16 games, went on to win two MLS Cups, and represented the USMNT in 43 internationals, including every match of the iconic 2002 World Cup quarterfinal run. He never left this community, and now he's immortalized in it. Minnesota made him. He made us better.

This is exactly why Vida y Deportes exists.

We are the bridge between the beautiful game and our community. And on July 4th at Utepils Brewery, we are bringing it all together — giant screen, live entertainment, vendors, non-profit partners, and a community ready to celebrate the World Cup, our culture, and each other.

The world is coming to us, Familia. Come be part of it.
