Draymond Green Targeted by Racist Comments During Timberwolves vs. Warriors Game 2

Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals at Target Center should have been remembered for the Timberwolves’ 117-93 win over the Warriors. Instead, the night was overshadowed by an incident that has drawn condemnation from both teams and renewed scrutiny of fan conduct in NBA arenas.

During the fourth quarter, Warriors forward Draymond Green—seated near the Warriors’ bench and later on a stationary bike—was targeted by two separate fans. One was ejected from the arena by Timberwolves staff after what the organization described as “an incident involving Draymond Green.” A second fan left voluntarily after allegedly making “racially charged comments,” according to a statement from the team.

“The team is continuing to investigate, and additional action may be taken,” the Timberwolves said. “The Timberwolves and Target Center are firmly committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and safe environment for all. Racist, hateful, or threatening behavior has no place at our games or in our community and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Witnesses said the second fan, who directed the racial slurs at Green, was never formally identified before exiting. Though the Timberwolves didn’t specify what triggered the initial ejection, they confirmed the fan had violated the NBA Fan Code of Conduct.

Green, no stranger to controversy and a lightning rod for fan emotion, did not shy away from addressing the issue postgame. He called out the stereotyping of Black athletes, particularly himself, as “angry” or “out of control.”

“I’m educated, I’m successful, I’ve got a beautiful Black family and strong values,” Green said. “But none of that matters when one person wants to strip that all away with a slur and reduce me to a stereotype.”

Timberwolves and league officials are continuing their investigation. The NBA has not yet issued a public statement.

Golden State head coach Steve Kerr praised the Timberwolves’ swift response.

“The Wolves handled that beautifully and Draymond is handling it well,” Kerr said. “I talked to him today about the incident and also his technical count.”

Kerr added that while he was disturbed by what happened, he does not hold it against the city of Minneapolis.

“I never take words from one person and label a city with that,” he said. “There’s just going to be individuals—sometimes they’re drunk, whatever—who cross the line. It’s unfortunate. But it doesn’t at all impact my view of Minneapolis.”

The tension in the arena had simmered since the second quarter, when Green swung an arm at Timberwolves center Naz Reid. Though the play didn’t escalate further, it may have contributed to the hostility directed at Green later in the game.

With the series now tied 1-1, attention will shift to San Francisco for Game 3. But in Minneapolis, the conversation will continue about how to ensure that passion for the game never crosses into hatred—and that players are protected not just by the rules of the game, but by the values of decency.
